It’s no surprise that trenches are a mainstay of the fall collections, but seeing them at the resort shows reminds us that they’re a fashion staple. This resort season, Bibhu Mohapatra and Mulberry showed classic khaki, while Lanvin and Nina Ricci favored glamour over utility, casting their versions of the iconic topper in neutral silks. At the prefall collections designers like Marni, Céline and Emilio Pucci reinvented the staple with patent leather, shorter hems and tweed. These not-so-basic basics are worth the investment.
