Sonic Roundup 6 8

  • Sigur Ros frontman Jónsi is still going strong off the release of his solo debut Go, including the Record Store Day exclusive remix EP Go Out. Now, you can hear the Fuck Buttons remix for “Tornado,” right from Jónsi’s soundcloud.

  • Jamie xx, the mastermind behind the beats for UK trio The xx, played new single “Far Nearer” a while ago during a radio appearance, but his plans to release it as a 7″ the following month never materialized. The song made the rounds on the internet in low-quality ripped form, but now sees the seven-minute steel drumming opus come to light. Streaming on soundcloud and available for purchase, the single is packaged with never-before-heard jam “Beat For,” and comes with a bright pink rehash of the cover for Jamie’s collaboration with Gil-Scott Heron, We’re New Here.

  • The Mountain Goats recently popped by the studios over at The AV Club to perform a rollicking cover of Jawbreaker’s punk smash “Boxcar.” They really get into it, too – watch John Darnielle ditch his glasses and make a couple small lyrical changes, presumably to make the song a better fit, below.

  • Portland’s YACHT are anticipating the release of their next record, Shangri-La. We’ve already heard lead single “Dystopia (The World is on Fire),” and now the band’s released the much sunnier “Utopia” via the DFA soundcloud. The new track trades synths for frenetic, excitable guitars and group chants. Imagine some hippies on crack.
